The City of Palos Verdes Estates was incorporated on December 20th, 1939, making it the oldest city of the four that occupy the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Located along the Southern California coastline of the Pacific Ocean, the city was masterplanned by the noted American landscape architect and planner Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. The City has its own police department, unlike the others which rely on the County of Los Angeles Sheriffís Department.

Part of the 90274 zip code, Palos Verdes Estates comprises one of Southern California ís most expensive neighborhoods. The quiet secluded neighborhoods are characterized by greenery and many broad thoroughfares in addition to parks and dedicated green space. The Art Jury is associated with the Palos Verdes Estates Home Ownersí Association and is responsible for managing the aesthetic and architectural aspects of the homes and other buildings throughout the city. In some areas, a red tile roof is a mandatory requirement for houses.

Shopping and services are found primarily in the Lunada Bay and Malaga Cove areas.

The Peninsula is well known for its excellent schools, including both public and private institutions. Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District has consistently ranked among the best public schools in California and the nation.

Palos Verdes Estates is home to the Palos Verdes Golf Club and the Palos Verdes Tennis Club. A substantial amount of land in the community is planned and dedicated as undeveloped open field habitat, with access to an extensive system of beautiful hiking trails, and road bike lanes and mountain bike trails. Equestrian facilities and horse trails are nearby.

Views in Palos Verdes Estates include the Pacific Ocean to the southwest or ‘Queen’s Necklace’ and Beach Cities to the North. There are several accessible beaches although most of the predominantly rocky shoreline is marked by beautiful high cliffs, located primarily along the western and southern areas of the Peninsula.
